The region boasts a heavy concentration of defense installations operated by the US Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. This famous Bay is host to the worlds largest naval fleet.

Originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay Native American Peoples for 12,000 years, the first European contact came when the Spanish sailed into the Bay in 1542. Following a brief period of Mexican rule, the region became a part of the United States in 1848 following the Mexican American War.
