Two major developments in the early 1960s – the closing of the local arsenal in 1960-64 and the completion of the Benicia-Martinez Bridge in 1962 completely changed the city. The population grew steadily at a rate of about 1,000 people per year between 1970 and 1995 and slowly the city transformed from a poor town to a suburb.
There are many interesting things to do in the city. The Farmers’ market is held on Thursday evenings during the summer months. There is a large community picnic held on 4th July at the City Park every year. Sailing is a popular activity and there is an active sailing community in the city. The community organizes several events and competitions. A yacht racing competition, sponsored by the local Yacht Club is held during the summer months every year.
