Factoid:
In 1839, the Mexican government granted almost 10,000 acres to Jose Antone Mesa and Miguel Jose Garcia. The area was part of a big land purchase in 1849. It was soon named New York of the Pacific. It is not known for sure, but the man who laid out the town, J.D. Stevenson, was a native of New York, and probably named it for his home town. It soon became known as New York Landing with much fishing and cannery operation. The name was changed again in 1903 when coal was discovered in the nearby hills. This time the name was Black Diamond. Finally, on February 11, 1911, after Columbia Geneva Steel opened, it was named Pittsburg, after the famous steel mill in the Pennsylvania by the same name. Many of today’s local residents have Italian heritage.
