History
The Seunen Indians were the original residents. A creek running through the area was named in tribute to an Indian vaquero named Ramon. “San” was added to the name in order to follow the Spanish tradition. Americans established the settlement in 1850. Numerous local canyons, hills and streets are named after the early settlers.
In 1864 an important stage line traversed through the valley on its way to Oakland. In 1891 the Southern Pacific Railroad arrived which allowed farmers to ship their crops and improve the local economy. In 1983 the citizens decided to incorporate the city.
