City History
John Schwartz was the first Euro-American to settle here in 1844. A large number of miners moved here when gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in 1848. At that time, James McDowell owned 600 acres of the land. When James McDowell was killed during the early gold rush era, his wife Margaret sold 160 acres of the land and named the area the “Town of Washington”.
