Alameda is both a county and a city and the name is the Spanish for “grove of poplar trees” or “tree-lined avenue”. The whole area was originally called Encinal, Spanish for “forest of evergreen oak”, which gives a clue to the name of Oakland which contained one of the largest coastal oak forests in the world. The city was founded in June 1853 and to this day is well known for its’ Victorian houses.
Alameda has the Altarena Playhouse and the Alameda Theater, and it also has a winery – Rosenblum Cellars winery which was founded by a local veterinarian Kent Rosenblum and his wife Kathy in 1978. Their daughter, Shauna, is the present day winemaker. The city also has its own municipal power service, a library, and a hospital. In addition, it hosts many arts, crafts, and holiday festivals. Lots of visitors attend the Island JAM, which was formerly known as the Peanut Butter Jam Festival, and Webster Street is closed to traffic for the Trick or Treat at Halloween and again for the Santa Claus Meet-n-Greet in December.
Three Major Events
Three other major events take place on Park Street – the Park Street Spring Festival occurs on Mothers’ Day and attracts 50,000 visitors, while the Park Street Art and Wine Faire is on the last weekend of July and brings in over 100,000 visitors. On the second Saturday of October is the Park Street Classic Car Festival showing over 400 different vehicles.
When all is said and done, that is about it as regards entertainment and exhibitions, so if you like the relatively quiet life Alameda corporate housing is a great choice.
