Factoid
Albuquerque was founded in 1706 at the site now known as Old Town. Nearly two centuries later, the arrival of the railroad in 1880 helped create a new commercial center east of the original settlement. Development around the railway station became what is now downtown Albuquerque.
The railroad also brought locomotive repair shops and offices to the city in the 1880s. These facilities were expanded and modernized by the Santa Fe Railway beginning in 1912, making the Albuquerque Rail Yards an important part of the city’s industrial history.
