Local History
The Shoshonean Indians were the initial inhabitants. In 1769 Don Gaspar Portola and his party were the first Europeans to arrive. Juan Crespi, a Franciscan Father went along with the expedition. The region was filled with orange groves but over time became a residential community.
In 1841 Andres Duarte was given the Rancho Azusa de Duarte from the California Governor, Juan Alvarado. Hugo Reid received the Rancho Santa Anita from the governor. The modern day city was created from these two ranchos. The arrival of the Santa Fe and the Southern Pacific railroad significantly increased the population. The city was founded in 1887.
