There are plenty of things to do in San Diego during your free time, not the least of which is San Diego Zoo. This is a world famous zoo, and rightly so. It was founded in 1916, just over 100 years ago, and has a huge collection of gorillas, eagles, tigers, sun bears, giraffes, Asian leopards, flocks of colourful wild birds, and a lot more. You can take a trip to the Australian Outback and wander among the koala bears and pandas in their bamboo forests. There is the Elephant Odyssey which takes you back in time and you can see the animals that used to roam wild in California. You can also take a ride on the double decker bus or climb aboard the Skyfari aerial tram for a birds’ eye view. There is also a restaurant so you can have a meal and spend the whole day in the zoo.
Whale Watching
Another specialty of San Diego is to go whale watching. The best time to go is from November to February when there is the best chance of seeing whales, but be warned: it can be a lot colder out at sea than on the land so you really do want to wrap up warmly. It’s not just whales – there are plenty of dolphins and sea lions about too.
Located in downtown is the USS Midway Museum, America’s longest serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century. It is really a floating city at sea and has 29 restored aircraft on the flight deck, flight simulators, and the Battle of Midway Theater all included in a very reasonable entry price.
