Is it “capital” or “capitol?” What’s in a name? It depends. The “a” is technically the city, and the “o” is technically the building. The Capitol is the seat of the Government of California, and, according to Wikipedia, “houses the chambers of the California State Legislature, made up of the Assembly and the Senate, along with the office of the governor of California”.
The building was designed by Reuben S. Clark, and was completed in 1874. It is located at the east end of the Capitol Mall and the west end of the Capitol Park. In 1973 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Situated in the grounds is also the California State Capitol Museum.
