Local History
This area was originally inhabited by Chumash Native Americans. Captain Gaspar de Portola, along with other Spanish explorers and missionaries, camped near the Chumash village in 1770. After Mexico’s independence in 1821, California became Mexico’s territory. The current site was part of the Rancho Las Virgenes and the Rancho El Conejo land grants. The city was incorporated as a city in 1981.
