History
The vast majority of the region was included in a substantial land grant named “New Helvetia” which was given to John Sutter by the Spanish. The city was established in 1849 on acreage acquired from John Sutter by Samuel Brannan, Henry Cheever and Pierson Reading. It was utilized as a supply center for the minors during the Gold Rush. When the Gold Rush ended settlers began to arrive due to the fertile soil and agriculture soon became a primary factor for the economy.
