Central Coast Region: Factoid
The area is home to the scenic “PCH” (Pacific Coast Highway), and is known for agriculture and tourism. You’ll find great wine growing areas in the region. For instance, the limestone rich soil in the Paso Robles area produces some of the the best Pinot Noir’s in the world. Also, the Central-Coast produces other key crops including; artichokes, lettuce, strawberries and fresh flowers.
Originally inhabited by the Chumash and other Native American peoples since before 10,000 BC. The area was colonized by Spanish Missionaries beginning in 1769. The Spanish established a series of Missions in the area, many of which evolved into the cities of today.
You’ll find nearby Vandenberg Air Force Base, is easily reached from Santa Maria or Lompoc. Cal Poly State University at San Luis Obispo and University of California at Santa Barbara, are among the many colleges and universities in the area.
